Terminillo viewpoint
It starts from the road that goes to La Lastrilla and the Parador de Turismo de Segovia just a few meters away. It’s the perfect place to see the northern part of the city, called “Segovia’s balcony”, from there you can see the grand stone ship that Segovia offers, emerging from a sea of greenery, with the Alcazar as a bow, the Cathedral tower as a huge pillar and the aqueduct line a tie that maintains the solid ground, -the cerrillo-, with the San Salvador and San Justo towers.
Zamarramala viewpoint
Just a few meters away from the Zamarramala exit, from where you can experience a monumental line that joins the Alcazar, the walls, San Esteban’s tower, the Cathedral…the entire city. From there though a narrow road going to San Marcos we find the Veracruz church.
You won’t find any other location in Segovia that raises more curiosity than the Veracruz, not just because of its shape but because of its placement, it drawled the attention of people interested in esoteric subjects.
Its closest model is the church of Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalem: because of its shape and function; this church wasn’t built to be a temple or a monastery: it’s a sanctuary…or a martyrium: a temple dedicated to evoke the death and resurrection of Christ.
In 1919 it was declared a national monument by a royal order from 4th of June 1919 and May 31st 1951, returned in possession of the Military order and Hospitalaria de San Juan de Jerusalén, de Rodas y de Malta, that was in charge of it’s preservation and upkeep until today.
Legend
Legend says that during a knight of order of the body’s sailing, he was left alone by the hit/other brothers and was attacked by rooks that damaged the body. He cursed the merciless birds, forbidding them to approach or enter the church. From that day no one has seen the Vera Cruz rooks.
Celebrations
The knights of the Malta order celebrate their religious acts in that church. It’s worth pointing out the acts of Good Friday, especially the processing of Cristo Yaciente and of Lignum Crucis in which the knights of the Malta order are dressed in black.
Piedad viewpoint (Mercy viewpoint)
La Piedad is a nearby hill of the Avila road, from where you can view the south of the city, from the shadow of the crosses which ends in an ordeal of stone with a reduced medieval marabout, with the San Millan neighbourhood in front of curtain that forms the village and the towers of its walls. It’s a curious visit of the old and new parts of Segovia.
Alcazar’s small square
It appears as an imaginary bouquet over the gash in which the Eresma and Clamores rivers merge, landscaped gardens with a statue of the Independence War Daoiz y Velarde, work of segovian sculptor Aniceto Marinas. On the left is located the Casa de la Quimica (Chemestry House), build in the ages of Enlightenment and a research centre of Louis Proust.
On both sides of the castle we are offered splendid views of the Pinarillo (with the Jewish cemetery) and the Vera Cruz church and Zamarramala..
Seeing the sunrise glow from this plaza in the mountains in the spring or the sunset in the warm autumn afternoon can be an unforgettable experience.

ITINERARY:
- Leaving from the aqueduct
- Padre Claret avenue.
- La Granja road
- La Granja de San Ildefonso
- La Granja road, exit to N-603
- Riofrio road
- Riofrio palace
- Return to the aqueduct trough N-603
- In the first part on our itinerary we can see a bit part of the aqueduct’s route in Segovia.
From it’s start to it’s arrival in Segovia it travels18 Km and first collected in a cistern known as El Caseron, after that it’s driven by a canal of half pipes up to a second tower, where it’s being filtered, so it can continue on it’s way. On arriving at the Dias Sanz plaza the straight angle changes and double archs start to form, that try to maintain the gentle slope of 1% that makes the water go to it’s destination in the canal that supports the impressive 166 archs. Its maximum altitude of 28,10m is located in the Azoguejo plaza.
- In the second part of our itinerary we arrive at the splendid La Granja de San Ildefonso palace, whose construction began in 1721. Its walls and statues, submerged in the vegetation paradise of its gardens still breathe the spirit that illuminates its birth, created by Felipe V and his wife Isabel Farnesio. The palace, predeceased by buildings that served royalty and a palace, among them the Royal Glass Factory, currently named National Glass Centre, is a work of the Spanish baroque built with French and Italian taste. It was designed by Ardemans as the Collegiate, which keeps inside the Royal Pantheon where Philip and Elizabeth are buried. Outside in it’s magnificent gardens, gods, nymphs and other mythological figures dominate the waters of the fountains and Versailles avenues over the feral background with the beautiful native flora (linden, maple, ash).
In the third and last part of out route we arrive from a narrow road on a hill surrounded by woods of oaks inhabited by deer where the Riofrio palace is located. The property was inherited the first time by Felipe V in 1724. It was a residence house; it preserves a hunting museum of the Spanish monarchs, including Alfonso XII, who chose it as a retreat fro the death of Maria de las Mercedes. It’s also of interest the gallery, the majestic stairs of honour, and the papers written from that age.

Pedraza de la Sierra is proud drawn on top of a hill. Walking along the villa, the visitor can discover sturdy and stately buildings and the Velasco castle (1516) whose ruins were bought by Ignacio Zuloaga to establish his studies.
The fortress with polygonal shape is located in the end of the villa and separated by a trench excavated in the rock. It preserves a square tower with tree floors and its old courtyard is converted in a garden in which, during the summer, Los Conciertos de las Velas are celebrated.
Shortly is the county of Castilnovo, with its romantic castle, like in a fairytale that dates from XIV century. It’s a building with trapezoidal shape, with six round and square towers built with of bricks and rows. In its walls open many mullioned windows that lighten the building. Currently home of the Hispano-Mexican Association.
After Sepulveda, with important walls that preserve four gates of the seven original ones present, which lead to the pillar filled Plaza Mayor (main plaza) whose identity is gives the castle, built over the old City Council.
